Nearly 50% of Small Business Owners Do Not Backup Their Data; Less Than 10% of Consumers Backup Daily

6 June 2009

A study by SOS Online Backup regarding backup practices of small businesses and consumers revealed that small businesses and consumers do not frequently back up their data. The study found out that "not having enough time" was the leading cause for the lack of regular backup of respondents.

The study also found out that nearly 50% of small businesses do not backup their data on a daily basis. It was quite a surprise to find out that although over 90% of small businesses have a policy to backup their computer data files on a daily basis, only half of them actually do backup their data on a regular basis. You really have to backup all your business files and protect your business.

Another interesting finding of the study was that businesses that do backup "spend a considerable amount of time each day safeguarding their data". And of those that do backup, 64% of small businesses spend at least 15 minutes backing up their data, which totals almost 65 hours a year or nearly 8 business days. For small businesses that have employees who are 100% utilized, that amount of time is lost productivity which can be used for other core areas of the business.

The SOS study estimates that among the small businesses surveyed (businesses with 1 to 15 employees), 31% are spending between $500 to $2,500 a year on their current backup operations. An additional 19% of those surveyed are estimated to be spending more than $2,500 a year on their existing backup systems, when fully costed to account for the loss of productivity and labor.

Using an online backup is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Using such offsite services gives you peace of mind and the security of knowing that your valuable data, photos, music files, electronic documents, videos files, and other digital files are safe and sound. Unfortunately, selecting a specific online backup service is not easy. Although dozens of online backup service providers focus on individual users, I found only a few services that I thought are worth your time, money, and attention. Whether you plan to use an online backup service for home or business use, it is highly recommended that you do not delay on your decision because PC disasters usually happen when you least expect them to happen.
